Mārama is an independent advisory founded by Michael Te Young (Ngāpuhi / Te Ahiwaru).
Mārama brings together cultural insight, audience and communications strategy, and digital expertise. With more than 20 years’ experience within agencies, publishers and brands, I help organisations understand the people they want to engage with and translate that understanding into actionable strategy.
Aotearoa is home to diverse peoples, cultures and communities. Yet marketing can overlook those differences, treating audiences as though they have the same experiences and view of the world.
Culture, values, traditions and relationships influence how people interpret messages and what prompts them to act. Demographics and consumer-centric behaviour provide useful information, but deeper understanding comes from knowing the context that surrounds people’s lives.
Mārama brings that perspective. Grounded in te ao Māori, my approach considers people in relation to their whānau, communities, environment and the wider world around them. That grounding informs the questions I ask, the relationships I build and the recommendations I make.
The name Mārama draws on the concept of clarity and understanding in te reo Māori. That reflects its purpose: to help organisations understand varied perspectives, why they matter and where to focus effort with empathy. This might come to life in a number of ways, whether an audience strategy or strengthening a team's cultural understanding or improving measurement, technology and ways of working so decisions are better informed. Same principle applied to different situations.
If you’re looking to strengthen cultural capability, develop a clearer engagement strategy or improve digital effectiveness, I’d welcome a conversation about what you want to achieve.
